Log splitters: the easy way to make firewood
Wood splitters are particularly suitable for large quantities of firewood and knotty wood. It is also for those who love a blazing fire in the homestead but who could do well without the tedious work of handling a splitting axe.
Models and drive types of wood splitters
A first basic distinction is that between standing splitters and horizontal splitters which latter includes the subspecies of the smaller table log splitter. In addition, wood splitters can be distinguished by their type of drive type and by performance. Depending on your personal requirements, you are bound to find a matching splitter at Grube. We will be happy to advise you personally on the phone.
Possible driving forms for wood splitters are:
- Electric motor, 230 V or 400 V operating voltage
- PTO drive from tractor
- Hydraulics directly from tractor or other equipment
For the selection of a wood splitter it is important to consider where you want to use the splitter. Powerful splitters with electric motor almost exclusively use 400 V engines. This voltage is commonly referred to as a power current or high voltage current. Wood splitters of this type are more or less precluded from use in the forest, since they require an external current source.
Tractor owners such as farmers often drive a log splitter via the PTO shaft. By means of its three-point mounting, the splitter is taken into the forest where the wood is to be split. The higher noise caused by the tractor´s motor may be one disadavntage. Therefore next to their PTO drive, some wood splitters also feature an electric motor for use in the vicinity of buildings.
Experience has shown that wood splitters with direct-mounted combustion engines can handle the strongly fluctuating load of timber less well than other types of construction. For this reason you will find in our Onlineshop only wood splitters with electric or PTO drive. We gladly present you with an individual offer.
Safety at the wood splitter
Apart from splitting performance, safety is an important issue when working with the wood splitter. Most accidents when working with wood splitters occur due to improper handling, such as manipulation of the safety devices. Two-hand operation of splitters is prescribed by regulations today. This method of operation reduces the risk of accidents because the user's hands can no longer inadvertently reach the leading splitting wedge. Wood splitters of deviant construction usually lack this prescribed feature.
At this point, we would like to draw attention to the danger caused by cone splitters. They are accident-prone because the user usually uses his leg to press the wood against the splitting device. Loose clothing is then easily caught by the cone splitter and pulled in. A safety device is usually not present at these splitters and will most certainly be absent in any home-made variety.. A quick stopping of the splitter is thus not possible which means that serious injuries can result. For this reason, cone splitters are not permitted in Germany, except for attachments for excavators.
Basically, safety shoes and safety goggles must be worn when working with the log splitter apart from tightly-fitting work clothes. Wearing a hearing protection also makes good sense.
How powerful does the splitter have to be?
It is not easy to answer this question. Before you make your purchase, think about the quantities you intend to split during the year. Powerful splitters save time because they devolve more splitting power and work faster. This applies to the forward speed with wich the splitting wedge moves towards the wood, as well as the reverse speed. It goes without sayint that such professional splitters sell at a higher price.
|Amount of wood per yearr
|Available power supply
|Recommended wood splitter
|3 - 5 m²
|Table wood spliter 4
- 5 t
|46-140 oder 46-141
|≤ 20 m²
log splitter 6,5 t
|≤ 40 m²
log splitter 7,5 t
|> 40 m²
log splitter 9,5 t
Another selection criteria is the length of the wood chunk which is usually split. Individual meter-length pieces can often be handled by smaller splitters however if this is to be done more frequently higher performance splitters are recommended. Preceding your selection you should have a clear idea of where your wood splitter would be stored.
The splitting force, also referred to as the splitting pressure, is usually specified in tons (t). Although this value is misleading, it is more common than the correct value in Kilonewton (kN). Whether a piece of wood can be successfully split depends, apart from the splitting power, also on its growth form. Heavy, dry wood and hardwood can be more difficult to split than knotless, fresh, soft or frozen wood. With a little practice, you will soon learn how the splitting wedge splits the log most easily. As a result, the splitting force is an essential factor of the wood splitter, but not the only one.
Pay attention to quality , if you want to buy a log splitter. A long-lasting professional splitter will save you time and trouble. Keep in mind that seemingly cheap devices can quickly become significantly more costly than expected due to failure, missing spare parts or even safety defects.

Wood splitting tips
For a rapid splitting of short logs, it is useful to limit the splitting trajectory. After spliiting the devices to not revese full distance, but are retained half-way by a delimiter. Table splitters do not have such a feature. Also remember to have a suitable 400-volt connection cable at hand for your electrical splitters.
Depending on the performance of the log splitter a splitting cross is also very useful. It can be attached to the wedge gap and will cause the wooden block to be split several times in one pass. However, the use of the splitting cross requires sufficient performance of the splitter. If the performance of the wood splitter is too small, the piece of timber will jagg without being completely split. If necessary, remove the splitting cross and split from the outside to the inside. Here as well, experience is the best guide for which logs can be split with the aid of a cross.
At any kind of work performed with log splitter, especially with table wood splitters , you should pay attention to a comfortable working height. Lifting cutwood with a straight back often prevents later back problems. For picking up of short logs we recommend sappies or manual packing tongs . It is also highly recommended to move the log splitter close to the firewood to be split. Doing so you will avoid unnecessary movements to and fro which will save you some time. Give some thought to the possibilities inherent in PTO drive ready devices. Irrespective of the type of drive, the splitter must have a straight, firm and secure stand. For a change of location, all our models have attached wheels. PTO shaft splitters are equipped with a three-point mount.
