Pruning and grafting
The art of grafting has been known since ancient times and was probably developed in the Mediterranean. Grafting is mainly practived on various types of fruit tree as well as on roses. Through grafting genetic traits can be preserved for centuries. For this reason, there are also still many ancient varieties of fruit trees and roses blooming as and carrying fruit as of old. Besides, it is also possible to produce up to 3 different varieties of apples on one and the same trunk.
Everybody can learn tthis craft, even the amateur gardener. It is possible to graft various types onto a tree or to implant different species into the crown by means of so-called "eyes". For grafting and pruning you need a tree saw or pruning shears, a grafting knife, a whetstone, nursery raffia and wound sealing wax.
